Deep Roots

Latrobe doesn't just watch football. It helped invent the professional game. On September 3, 1895, quarterback John Brallier openly accepted $10 plus expenses to play for the Latrobe YMCA against Jeannette, becoming the first football player to openly turn pro. Latrobe won, 12–0, and the town has carried the game ever since.

Memorial Stadium (where the Wildcats play their Friday nights) has hosted the pros too: in 1952 the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Green Bay Packers 7–6 in an NFL preseason game right here, and the Steelers still summer up the road at Saint Vincent.

Wildcats broadcasting carries its own tradition: long before livestreams, Latrobe fans followed the team over local radio. The Wildcats Network picks up that torch with cameras, replays, and a broadcast crew that bleeds orange and black.

Help us tell the story

We're collecting the history of Wildcats radio and TV coverage: names, years, photos, tape. If you were part of it (or know who was), reach out on Facebook.
